Reaching Out to the Community

2008-12-22

Employees at a number of BNSF facilities reached out during the holiday season to help the less fortunate. This is the second of a two-part holiday round-up story showing how the generosity of employees is making the season a little brighter for others.

Adopting children and families

Topeka, Kan., Technology Services employees showed support for the community’s Adopt-A-Family campaign organized through the United Way of Greater Topeka. One fundraiser included a “penny war” contest between groups. Once the money is raised, employees add a personal touch by shopping for gifts, wrapping them – and arranging for delivery. Money is also set aside to provide Christmas dinner for area families in need.

Employees in Topeka, Kan., who work in the General Office Building purchased gifts for The Villages, a local non-profit that operates home for abused, neglected or abandoned children. Employees shop for gifts based on wish lists, then wrap and deliver the presents prior to Christmas.

The St. Louis Safety Committee adopted three families through the Circle of Concern community charity program. Safety committee members raised $1,000 by selling chances to win a variety of prizes. Area department managers donated the prizes, which included gift certificates, hockey tickets and more.

For the fourth consecutive year, the Houston Diversity Council sponsored a holiday collection drive, gathering items such as toys, coats, clothing and household goods for the Star of Hope Mission’s Women and Family Emergency Center. The collection drive is a competition among Houston-area BNSF locations. The winning location receive a recognition feed; this year, a fish fry is planned for the location where employees donated the most.

Operation Santa

About 600 Marines will have gifts to open this holiday season thanks to more than 100 individuals and business, including BNSF. The Springfield, Mo., Division donated hand warmers and gift cards to the Operation Santa organizer to purchase gifts. Each Marine receives cards, a stocking filled with candy and food,  and a package containing hats, gloves and socks. Every platoon receives gifts for 30 to 50 Marines to share.
